How to Add a Post in WordPress

Whether you have a blog or a website that you would like to incorporate a blog on to, adding a post is the primary method to add your content. While a page is static, including content that doesn’t tend to change, like a contact page, posts are more likened to a news feed, tied to the date they are posted. Posts appear on your site in reverse chronological order and are what constitute your RSS feed, allowing for easy sharing capabilities across multiple social media platforms. Posts also allow for features such as tags and categories as well as comments from your users. Adding a New Post

Beginning from admin dashboard, go to the side panel menu over ‘Posts’, and within the subcategory, select ‘Add New’.





From the edit page for your new post, you will have many different options on how to add content and customize each post. Although self-explanatory, the top box is where you want to designate a title for your post while the larger box below is your area to input your text, images, and video.




Using Headings

You can indicate which header you would like to use by clicking on the drop-down menu, selecting a header to then use for your text.





Customizing Text

You have the ability to change your text style and alignment as well as create a bulleted or numbered list and or add hyperlinks by using each corresponding button in the toolbar.





Viewing Post in Visual or Code

You can choose two different views while editing your post,  as your post’s code or the visual appearance. By clicking on the ‘Visual’ tab you can edit with a display similar to how it will appear on your website.





Alternatively, you can click on the ‘Text’ tab to view in the HTML format.





Adding Media to Your Post

If you have an Image or video you would like to include in your post, click on the ‘Add Media’ button.





To add new media, Select the ‘Upload Files’ tab followed by the ‘Select Files’ button to then browse for your selection on your local drive.




Once you have uploaded your media file, be it an image or video, you can then select the image and click on ‘Insert Into Post’.






Editing Your Media

After you insert your media file into your post, you still have the option to edit. To do this, hover over the video or image and click on the ‘Pencil Icon’ edit button.






This will bring you to image details where you can make changes to your image/video caption, alternative text, alignment, size and link when the image is clicked on.





Selecting a Format for Your Post

There are several formatting options to indicate the nature of your post and the way in which it will appear on your blog or website.

  • Standard – The standard post that will include a title
  • Aside – Post that is more like a memo that will not include a title
  • Image/Video – Post that is singularly an image or video
  • Quote – Post that is a quote from another author
  • Link – Post that is a link to another website or blog
  • Others – There are others types that may not appear but can be added such as Status, Gallery of multiple images or Audio

You can select the one that applies to your post and it will update when you save the draft.



Adding Categories and Tags

An efficient way to organize your posts by topic is by utilizing categories. You can create a new category by clicking on ‘Add a New Category’ underlined in blue, and then type a keyword that represents what your blog is about. When you have entered your category name, you can then click the ‘Add New’ Category button.





You can enter multiple categories or add a sub-category for a topic, called a tag. Create a new tag by typing it into the box below ‘Tags’ and click the ‘Add’ button.





Adding a Featured Image

If you would like to supplement your post with a thumbnail image to appear next to your post on your homepage, you can achieve this by setting a Featured Image. Begin by clicking on ‘Set Featured Image’.





This will bring you to a page that appears similar to the process of adding media to your post. From here you can upload a new file or select a file that is already in your library and click on ‘Set Featured Image’.




Saving, Previewing and Publishing Your Post

While you are working on a post, it is a good idea to save along the way. you can click on ‘Save Draft’ at any time to do so. Before you move to publish your work, you can check to see how it will appear by clicking on the ‘Preview’ button. Once you have completed your post in its entirety and you wish to make it available for your users to view, you can then click on ‘Publish’.



Viewing Your Completed Page

After you publish your work, make sure you check how it displays in your own browser. Select ‘View Page‘ and check for any errors.





You can also look at the presentation of your post on the homepage, which will showcase your featured image as well if select one for your post.
