How to Add a WordPress Menu

When creating a new website, its essential to have a well-placed navigational menu to allow your users to properly operate your site. WordPress allows you to build a customized menu in a matter of minutes and modify the location and appearance to your desired specifications. Although the overall look of your menu will depend upon your theme, there are several options you will be able to adjust to fine tune it for performance and appearance as well as subcategories within a drop-down menu. View the video tutorial or peruse the step-by-step guide below for instruction to get you started.

Create a New Menu

From your admin dashboard, mouse over ‘Appearance’ and within the subcategories,  select ‘Menus’.

Once you arrive on the Menus page, click on ‘Create a New Menu’.

Select your Menu Name and Pages/Posts

When building your new menu’s structure, the first thing you will want to do is assign a name to your menu. You may want to have multiple menus on your website, and this will ensure you don’t confuse them when making any future edits. You will then begin to choose the pages (or posts) you would like to include in your menu. Once you have checked the boxes next to the corresponding pages of your choice you will want to click the ‘Add to Menu’ button.

Organize Your Menu Structure

If you want to add posts to your menu, you can click on the ‘Posts’ drop down menu under ‘Pages’ to add in the same fashion as with your pages. After adding the page and post categories to your menu, you can then select and drag to reposition each page in an order the suits the needs of your site.

You also have the option to add subcategories with your pages. Simply drag a page you want to make into a subcategory below the parent category and to the right until it is staggered beneath.

You can continue to customize the position and order of your parent and subcategories to make an aesthetically pleasing and functional layout within the menu structure section of the menu edit page.

Once you have completed making changes, you can then click on the ‘Save Menu’ button.

Manage Your Menu Location

To modify the location of each of your menus, you can do so by clicking on the tab labeled ‘Manage Locations’.

Your Manage Locations page might differ from the visual below, as different themes may offer alternative locations dependent on the organization style. To select the placement of your new menu, you can click on the drop-down menu under ‘Assigned Menu’ and make your selection. When you are done, click on the ‘Save Changes’ button.
