How to Make a Website for Free Using WordPress.com

To create a website that is completely free of hosting or domain fees, an easy and viable option is to use WordPress.com. When setting up my own blog on the site, I found that it was a quick and painless process that took less than 5 minutes to setup, so that I could then customize my content.

A free WordPress.com website is generally most ideal for simple blogging or a small traffic space to express your ideas and opinions. This is different from operating a site with wordpress.org. (not free– you will incur expenses such as hosting and domain costs) Bear in mind there are some drawbacks to operating a completely free website using wordpress.com:

  • Domain will be a sub-domain of WordPress.com
  • Content is limited to 3 GB of storage
  • You do not retain ownership of your content
  • Cannot upload videos or custom themes or plugins
  • Cannot Sell ads, create an online store or membership site

In addition, a WordPress.org site also tends to be taken more seriously. Despite any of these shortcomings, using this service does have its upsides for sure. Free is Free, and the other huge benefit is that you don’t have to worry about tending to the time-consuming site maintenance involved in any updates, backups or optimization. Setup for a WordPress.org site can most definitely be more time consuming to get up and running, whereas, with the free version, you can post and edit in a matter of minutes.

Create an Account on WordPress.com

The First step to create your new site is to visit WordPress.com on your preferred web browser. On the homepage, you can click on the ‘Get Started’ button. As you can see, there are a couple of different places you will find the button on the home page alone.

Choose an Address for Your Website

Next, choose an address for your website. Typically you can type in the desired address and it may give you a second choice (generally, with several numbers after it) if an exact match is already in use. You can also enter multiple keywords into the search bar to generate a web address. To ensure this will be free make sure it says ‘Free’ to the right of the address. Remember this will be a sub-domain of WP if you want to upgrade to your own domain, any address labeled ‘Included in wordpress.com premium’, you do have the option for a price. When you have determined the web address you want to use, click on the ‘Select’ button.

Select the Right Plan

After you have picked your address, the next step is very straightforward. To create a free site, select the free plan. just click on the ‘Start with Free’ button.

Enter the Required Information for Your Account

For the next step, you will need to create a WordPress.com account. Enter your email address and then select a username. WordPress will give you a suggested available username once you reach this page. If you choose to change this, just make sure the box surrounding your username remains green after you have attempted a new one. Then, designate a password for your account, once completed, click on the ‘Continue’ button. (Alternatively, if you already have Google account you would like to connect your existing profile information to, you can select this option instead.)

You may have to wait a minute after this last step, but it only took me a few seconds before the site was up and running and ready to personalize, post and publish to the web.
