How to Set Up a Google AdWords Account

Step 1 – Go to the Google AdWords homepage and click the ‘Start Now‘ button.

Step 2 – Enter the email you want associated with the account, as well as the URL of your website. Once all the required information has been provided, click ‘Continue‘ to advance to the next step.

Step 3 – You will then be prompted to input your email address. (If you have a preexisting gmail account, your information will probably appear so that you can link the AdWords account to your gmail. You can also sign up with a non-gmail account as well.) After you have entered your information, click ‘Next‘ to continue. (The corresponding page will just ask you to input your “Password”)

Step 4 – You will then arrive at the page “Your first campaign”, which will ask a series of questions that you must answer. The questions are as follows:

  • Your budget – This is basically asking how much are you willing to pay for your ads on a daily basis. Enter a number that you are comfortable with.
  • Choosing a target audience – This section requires 3 essential pieces of information. First, select the general location of your target audience. Second, you are going to want select whether you would like to run your Ads on a “Search Network” or “Display Network” or both. A Search Network is when your ads are displayed on the results page of Google when someone searches specific keywords relating to your website. A Display Network(Also known as the “Content Network”) is when your ads are displayed on someone else’s website that is related to your product. The third component of the “Choose a target audience” section is “Keywords”. You must choose the words or phrases that directly correspond with your website/product. Example: If you have a sunglasses website, you may want to choose keywords like Sunglasses, Oakley, Ray-Ban, Aviators, etc.
  • Set your bid – A bid is basically what you are willing to pay per click(PPC). “Automatic Bidding” is the default when signing up for AdWords, which means that Google will try to get you as many clicks as possible within the budget that you set earlier. If you are new to AdWords I advise that you stay with the default until you understand more about the bidding process which will be discussed later in this guide.
  • Write your ad – The last section entails the writing of the actual ad that will be displayed on Google. There are four sections:
    • Landing Page – This is simply the URL of your website(usually inserted automatically).
    • Headline 1 – This is the first line of text that will be seen on your ad. You are going to want to choose something that describes what your website has to offer. As you can see below, the example Google gave me when signing up was “New York Budget Hotel”, if I was an owner of a hotel or hotel booking website, this would be a quality headline to present to potential customers trying to book a cheap New York hotel online.
    • Heading 2 – The second headline should state something that catches your target audience’s attention. Google’s example “Best NY Hotel Rates in Seconds” is a solid headline to follow the first one.
    • Description – Write a quick description explaining the services/products that you are providing. You will be limited to 80 characters, so one to two sentences max. (Be sure to include keywords in your ad.)

Remember, you will always be able to go back and edit your ad in the future. Once you have filled in all the required fields, click ‘Save and continue‘ to advance to the payment page.

Step 5 – Now you must provide your payment information to complete the sign up process. As you can see at the top of the image below, there is an overview of your order showing the ad that you created, daily potential reach, budget, and bidding. Provide the following payment information:

  • Billing country
  • Time zone(Be sure to select your correct time zone because this cannot be changed later)
  • Introductory offer(If you received a coupon code, enter into the space available. You can also check the box below if you would like to receive special offers and discounts in the future via email.)
  • Account type(Select either Business or Personal.)
  • Name and address
  • Primary contact(Enter your name, telephone number, and email.)

  • Payment method(Input the credit/debit card information that you would like to use for the transaction. Payments are automatic and charged when you reach your billing threshold or 30 days after your last automatic payment, whichever comes first.)
  • Read the following terms and conditions. If you accept, check the box that reads, “I agree to the AdWords terms and conditions”. Once the form has been completed, click ‘Finish and create ad‘.

Congratulations! You have successfully created your Google AdWords account. Click ‘Go to your account‘ to view your AdWords Dashboard.
